About the Chevrolet Corvair

The Corvair was created to compete with current competitive American models of the Ford Falcon and the Plymouth Valiant. In the Late 1950’ early 1960’s the task for the current largest American car company at the time was to also find an alternative to these and successfully imported cars, primarily the VW Beetle.

The technical solution offered at the time made the Corvair unique. While for decades all Major US manufacturers followed a standard American passenger car design (water-cooled, longitudinally mounted front engine, rear wheel drive), the Corvair however was the only American production car remotely similar to the VW Beetle. So the Corvair got a swing axle with an air-cooled rear engine.
All Corvair’s possessed an air-cooled six-cylinder boxer type engine with an initial 2300 cc (80 hp), later with 2400 cc (84 hp) and 2700 cc (95 hp).  In 1962, the top model for Corvair was the “Spyder”. The Spyder featured a turbocharger from the factory (however this was not the first turbocharged production car in the US).   Servometer had developed a replacement to the thermostat of the Corvair in 2000.  See the sk-22550 Corvair Thermostat.
